Rivers State Police to Enforce Strict Crackdown on Vehicles Without Number Plates
The Rivers State Police Command has announced a statewide enforcement operation targeting vehicles operating without valid number plates. The exercise is scheduled to begin on March 16, 2026, as part of efforts to improve security and ensure compliance with vehicle registration laws across Rivers State.
Authorities say the enforcement will focus on vehicles that do not display proper number plates, as well as those with hidden, covered, or altered registration numbers.
According to the Rivers State Police Command, the initiative is aimed at strengthening public safety and addressing security concerns associated with unregistered vehicles.
Security agencies note that vehicles without identifiable number plates often create challenges for law enforcement because they cannot easily be traced during investigations. Such vehicles have reportedly been used in criminal activities including kidnapping, robbery, and other security threats.
Police officials say ensuring that all vehicles display clear and valid number plates will make it easier to track and identify vehicles involved in crimes.
The police confirmed that the operation will target several violations, including:
Vehicles operating without valid number plates
Covered, hidden, or obscured number plates
Vehicles without proper registration documents
Illegal use of flashing or revolving security lights
Vehicles that violate other vehicle identification regulations
Motorists found violating these regulations may have their vehicles impounded, and owners could face legal prosecution under existing traffic and security laws.
Police Warn Motorists Ahead of Enforcement Date
The spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, urged motorists to comply with vehicle registration regulations before the enforcement begins.
Drivers are advised to:
Ensure their vehicles have valid and visible number plates
Carry complete vehicle registration documents
Avoid installing unauthorized security lights
Follow all road and vehicle identification laws
The police emphasized that compliance will help motorists avoid penalties during the enforcement exercise.
The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, assured residents that the enforcement exercise will be carried out professionally and within the law.
He noted that the operation is not intended to harass motorists but rather to promote accountability and improve security across the state.
According to the police, the initiative forms part of broader strategies aimed at reducing criminal activities and strengthening law enforcement operations within Rivers State.
Residents Encouraged to Support Security Efforts
Residents of Rivers State have been encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement officers and report suspicious vehicles or activities within their communities.
Security authorities believe that stricter compliance with vehicle number plate regulations will significantly improve vehicle identification, making it more difficult for criminals to operate anonymously.
As the enforcement date approaches, motorists are urged to ensure their vehicles are fully registered and display valid number plates to avoid sanctions during the police operation.
