Margaret Lawrence university banned using of smartphone on campus to reduce distraction on students.

Abuja, Nigeria — Margaret Lawrence University has officially banned smartphone use on campus to reduce distractions and enhance academic performance. Vice‑Chancellor Professor Ernest Izevbigie announced the new policy during the university’s matriculation ceremony for the 2025/2026 academic session, which welcomed 272 new students.

The university smartphone ban prohibits the use of all smartphones and Android devices on campus. Students caught violating the rule face disciplinary action, including a two-week suspension for first-time offenders, with stricter consequences for repeat violations.
However, students are allowed to carry basic mobile phones that support only voice calls and text messaging to maintain essential communication with family.

According to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Izevbigie, smartphones have become major distractions, negatively impacting students’ academic focus and overall learning experience. The policy is designed to help students stay disciplined, focused, and productive while on campus.
Prof. Izevbigie emphasized that limiting access to smartphones will allow students to spend more time on studies and personal development, supporting the university’s goal of high academic standard.

During the matriculation, university leadership, including Founder and Pro‑Chancellor Paul Odili, reinforced the importance of discipline, responsibility, and community commitment. The smartphone ban aligns with the institution’s core values and commitment to fostering a structured academic environment.

The smartphone ban at Margaret Lawrence University reflects a growing global trend of educational institutions limiting mobile phone use. Research shows that uncontrolled smartphone access can distract students and negatively affect academic performance.
At the same time, educational experts note that mobile phones can support learning when used responsibly. Margaret Lawrence University’s policy represents a strict approach to managing student technology use, emphasizing focus and traditional academic engagement.

The university will monitor compliance and evaluate the policy’s impact on student engagement and academic outcomes. This approach may influence similar campus smartphone policies in other Nigerian and African universities.
