Windstorm Wravages Niger State, Leaving Thousands Displaced And Homes destroyed

A devastating windstorm has swept through communities in Niger State, leaving a trail of destruction and displacement. The disaster has destroyed over 1,000 homes, affecting approximately 5,000 people who are now in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) is currently assessing the damage and identifying areas of need, urging communities in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer grounds.

According to reports, the windstorm, accompanied by heavy rainfall, caused widespread destruction in Mokwa Local Government Area, with many residents forced to flee their homes. The Chairman of Mokwa Local Government Area, Jibrin Abdullahi Muregi, has confirmed the incident and assured that relevant authorities, including SEMA, have been notified to provide necessary assistance .

The impact of the disaster is severe, with many families struggling to cope with the loss of their homes and belongings. The destruction of homes has also raised concerns about the risk of waterborne diseases, as many residents are forced to seek shelter in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions.

This incident is not isolated, as Niger State has been prone to natural disasters, including floods and windstorms, in recent years. In June 2025, a similar windstorm and flood incident affected several states, including Sokoto, Kaduna, and Taraba, resulting in the loss of over 220 lives and displacement of thousands.

The State Emergency Management Agency is working to provide relief materials and support to affected communities, but more assistance is needed to address the growing humanitarian crisis. The agency is urging communities to take proactive measures to mitigate the impact of future disasters, including relocating from flood-prone areas and engaging in environmental conservation efforts.
