Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed optimism that the conflict with Ukraine is nearing its end
Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed optimism that the conflict with Ukraine is nearing its end, stating “I think that the matter is coming to an end” in an interview with reporters following a scaled-back Victory Day parade in Moscow. This remark comes amidst a US-brokered three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, which includes a prisoner exchange of 1,000 detainees from each side .
Putin’s comments were made against the backdrop of a significantly reduced military parade, with no display of ground equipment for the first time in nearly two decades, citing security concerns and operational demands in Ukraine. The event, typically a showcase of Russia’s military prowess, featured a video presentation of military hardware instead .
In his address, Putin reiterated Russia’s stance, describing the war as a “just” cause and accusing NATO of backing an “aggressive force” in Ukraine. He expressed willingness to negotiate new security arrangements for Europe, naming former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder as his preferred interlocutor .
The ceasefire, announced by US President Donald Trump, is seen as a humanitarian gesture, with both sides exchanging prisoners and suspending kinetic activity. However, the truce has been marked by mutual accusations of violations, though no major strikes have been reported .
Putin’s remarks suggest a potential shift in the conflict’s trajectory, but European leaders remain cautious, emphasizing that Russia must be held accountable for its actions. The war, now in its fifth year, has resulted in hundreds of thousands of casualties and widespread destruction in Ukraine .
As the situation unfolds, Putin has indicated openness to meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a third country, provided a comprehensive peace agreement is reached. The international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution to the devastating conflict .
