Speaking during the Infrastructure Dialogue 2026 held in Abuja, the police chief revealed that the Nigeria Police Force currently operates only about 2,000 police stations nationwide, a figure he described as inadequate to effectively secure the country and respond to growing security challenges.

According to the IGP, the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission has identified the need for at least 3,000 additional police stations, alongside 1,000 new prisons and 170 new barracks to strengthen the nation’s security framework. He stressed that these infrastructure gaps are affecting the operational effectiveness of the police and limiting the force’s ability to adequately protect lives and property.

Disu, who was represented at the event by Commissioner of Police in charge of Works, Obiora Oranwusi, noted that insecurity remains a major threat to economic growth and investor confidence in Nigeria. He explained that criminal activities such as vandalism, sabotage, extortion and attacks on critical infrastructure continue to pose serious challenges to national development.

He called for sustainable financing models, public-private partnerships and increased investment in security infrastructure to address the situation.

Disu also stated that the Nigeria Police Force is undergoing strategic reforms aimed at repositioning the institution as a proactive force capable of supporting national development and creating a safer environment for businesses and citizens alike.
