The industrial action, which began under the directive of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), comes after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum earlier issued to the state government, as well as a subsequent seven-day reminder notice that reportedly yielded no meaningful response.
According to union leaders, the strike became necessary due to the continued hardship faced by workers across various local government councils in the state. The workers are demanding immediate payment of outstanding salary arrears, implementation of overdue promotions, and proper remittance of pension deductions.
NULGE officials stated that many employees have endured months of financial uncertainty, with some struggling to meet basic living expenses as a result of delayed wages. The union also expressed concern over what it described as the neglect of workersā welfare despite repeated engagements with government authorities.
The strike is expected to affect administrative operations across local government secretariats in the state, potentially disrupting public services and slowing grassroots governance activities. Residents seeking government-related services at the local council level may experience delays until the dispute is resolved.
Labour representatives maintained that the action would continue until concrete steps are taken by the state government to address the workersā grievances. They emphasized that the union had exhausted dialogue and other peaceful measures before resorting to industrial action.
The development adds to growing concerns over workersā welfare and public sector financing in several states across Nigeria, where salary delays and pension issues have continued to spark tensions between labour unions and government authorities.
Observers believe that swift negotiations between the government and labour leaders will be necessary to prevent prolonged disruption and restore normal activities in the affected local government areas.
