Osun State Government Accounts Frozen Over Alleged ₦11 Billion Fund Diversion, Not Election Related – EFCC Stated
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed that it froze several Osun State Government bank accounts as part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged diversion of approximately ₦11 billion in public funds.
According to the anti-graft Agency Report Sheet , the action was taken after investigators detected what it described as suspicious financial movements involving the funds. The commission said freezing the accounts was a necessary step to prevent any further movement or possible dissipation of public money while investigations continue.
The EFCC also dismissed claims that the decision was politically motivated or linked to the forthcoming Osun State governorship election. The commission insisted that the investigation is purely based on its constitutional mandate to combat financial crimes and safeguard public resources.
In a statement, the agency urged Nigerians not to politicise the matter, stressing that its actions are guided by evidence and due process rather than political considerations. It maintained that all individuals and institutions involved in the investigation would be treated fairly and in accordance with the law.
The development has generated widespread reactions among political stakeholders and residents of Osun State, with some expressing concern over the timing of the action. However, the EFCC reiterated that corruption investigations are carried out independently and should not be interpreted through a political lens.
The commission assured the public that it remains committed to transparency, accountability, and the recovery of misappropriated public funds. It added that further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
The freezing of the accounts marks another significant step in the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to tackle alleged financial misconduct in public institutions across Nigeria, as authorities continue to emphasize the importance of accountability in the management of government resources.
